The Sherrod Family owned and resided on the property prior to the Civil War.  Following the War, Joseph Wheeler married the widow of Ben Sherrod; and thus, made North Alabama his home.  Having moved back from New Orleans, where he spent a few years following the War, Wheeler and his wife had an additional structure built for what was becoming a fast-growing family.  It is this newer structure that most people think of as "The Wheeler Home."  In reality, the family utilized both dwellings, which were connected by a covered walkway.

Sherrod Home Porch Stabilization (circa 2000)

Under AHC direction, structural engineers have developed a support system for the front porch of the Sherrod Home at Pond Spring.   The porch structure had become unstable in recent years.  To address the issue, 2x12 inch timbers were attached together to form four large composite beams to stabilize the structure.  Restoration of this structure will follow work to be accomplished on the primary Wheeler Home structure.
